Biking in LutherCountry

You don't have to be a world-class athlete to explore LutherCountry's cultural and scenic landscape by bike! Thanks to the invention of e-Bikes and our region's extensive network of well-developed bike paths, the whole family can feel safe and secure while following in the footsteps of the Great Reformer atop their two-wheeled steed. Even if you do get a bit winded, there's no need to worry: Almost every town along the various long-distance bike paths has a train station, allowing you to travel by bike and train depending on your needs. Here are just a few of the bike paths waiting to show you LutherCountry from its most beautiful side:

Elbe Bike Path

The Elbe Bike Path follows the Elbe River on predominantly paved bike paths. Bikers can look forward to discovering LutherCountry's many faces, from rolling vineyards and green meadows to the riverside woodland of the Elbe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In addition to this lovely scenery, you'll also pass by the LutherCities Magdeburg, Dessau, and Lutherstadt Wittenberg, with highlights such as the Hundertwasser architecture project GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG, Dessau's Bauhaus, and the Castle Church in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

The Thuringian Chain-of-Towns Bike Path

This is a great option for bikers who'd like to focus on exploring Southern LutherCountry during their stay. This route features famous LutherCities like Eisenach and its Wartburg Castle, Erfurt, and Weimar, as well as the lovely towns of Jena, Gera, and Altenburg. Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, is a definite highlight on this tour, inviting you to stroll across its romantic Merchants' Bridge and visit the Protestant Augustinian Monastery where Martin Luther once lived, which is now home to the permanent exhibition “BIBLE – MONASTERY – LUTHER”.

Werra Bike Path

This long-distance bike path allows you to take adventure to the max, passing by vast forests, flat river plains, and dense woodlands along back roads, paved paths, and dirt roads. The Werra Bike Path is ideal for those looking for a bit of a challenge, as it combines steep descents, rolling hills, and flat stretches of countryside all in one path. Once you get to Eisenach, you can even travel some of the way by canoe. The path also passes by the town of Meiningen, which is said to be where Thuringian dumplings ("Thüringer Klösse") were invented. Pristine nature, the magnificent Wartburg Castle, and traditional cuisine – what more could you want?

Ilm Valley Bike Path

One of Southern LutherCountry's most popular bike paths, the Ilm Valley Bike Path invites you to discover some of the most fascinating relics of Germany's cultural history. The first section starts in the Thuringian Forest and is an easy, downhill ride. The crowning jewel of this particular path is undoubtedly Weimar, a UNESCO World Heritage site associated with Goethe, Liszt, and Bauhaus. With this path, you can expect romantic Germany at its finest: Fairytale woods, lush vineyards, expansive plains, dreamy meadows, and idyllic villages as far as the eye can see!
