"Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world."
Luther's self-composed hymns and vigorous promotion of music spurred the Reformation onward and led to a drastic change in Protestant church services: Music was to play a central role in every service, particularly songs that could be understood and sung by all. His first hymnal was published in 1524, while his belief in the strong connection between music and worship has reached far into the future to influence famous composers like the great Johann Sebastian Bach. Not only that, but many of his songs have stood the test of time and are still sung in churches around the world to this day, perhaps the most famous of which being "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God". Luckily, there are many opportunities and music events that welcome you to celebrate this musical tradition during your stay in LutherCountry!
Imagine being surrounded by the soul-stirring sound of music echoing through an ancient church; this magical experience is waiting for you in LutherCountry and sure to bring you even closer to Martin Luther's living memory. You can also visit the Wilhelmsburg Castle Church in the romantic, half-timbered town of Schmalkalden to enjoy a concert played on an organ with wooden pipes that date all the way back to 1589.
