While few men or women can be described as having "changed the history of the world", Martin Luther is one of the rare exceptions. How would you like to stand inside the exact room where the "Father of the Reformation" translated the New Testament into German? Or admire the pulpits from which he preached and taste his favorite beer? Then it's time you visited LutherCountry, where you can explore Luther's old stomping grounds and trace the Protestant religion back to its roots!
The countdown to the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation is well under way. Our tip? Come visit now. Stay in the Romantik Hotel at the Wartburg, the hotel in the shadow of the castle where Martin Luther translated the Bible; or check in to the Steigenberger Hotel Thüringer Hof, set in the streets of Eisenach, where Luther walked, near the house where he lived, and the church where he preached. All are still standing, silent witnesses to the man who changed the course of world history.
Few cities in Germany are as closely tied to the Reformation as Schmalkalden, which was thrust into the spotlight of European politics in 1530 with the foundation of the Schmalkaldic League. By forming the league, the Protestant Estates hoped to defend their faith against the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. The most prominent of the seven meetings was the “Schmalkaldic Princely Council” of 1537, during which Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles – a profession of faith still used to ordain Lutheran pastors to this day.
