The scenes of the panorama bring Lutherstadt Wittenberg to life. Wilhelmsburg Castle in Schmalkalden

The new Schmalkaldic League, an alliance of 16 Protestant princes who pledged to defend each other against Catholic opposition, assembled in the Schmalkalden Town Hall in 1537. The assembly, or diet, was led by Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon and was a roll call of Europe's rich and famous, with 42 Evangelist theologians present. The Articles of Faith presented by Luther during the meeting were incorporated into the Evangelical Church’s Book of Concord. Today, priests are still ordained with the Schmalkalden Articles of Faith.

Local artists display their work every first Advent and offer unique Christmas gifts. One highlight of this Christmas market is the Christmas tree. It was in Weimar in 1815, that the first Christmas tree was publicly displayed in Germany. This custom became widely popular and many towns adopted it. Of course, this tradition can still be seen in Weimar, and every year, a Christmas tree is set up to cheer the visitors. After Christmas Eve the magic isn’t over. Till January the Christmas Market turns into a Winter Market.

Cathedral Steps Festival Erfurt

This unique festival, an open-air spectacle on the cathedral steps, has been in existence since 1994. Each year the Theater Erfurt brings a new performance to the Cathedral Square, set before the impressive 700-year-old backdrop of the St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Severi Church, a medieval church ensemble. The summer event highlight has already inspired several hundred thousand visitors to make a pilgrimage to what is certainly Thuringia's most beautiful open-air stage. For quite some time viewers have traveled not only from Germany, but also from many other European countries, as well as from the USA, China and Australia.

Every summer the Cathedral Steps which run between the magnificent architectural ensemble of the Cathedral of St. Mary and the Church of St. Severus are transformed into one of the world´s most beautiful festival stages. It is traditional for the Festival Plays to bring together artists from all genres in a way which unites singers, choirs and orchestras, theatre and ballet.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg stages a major Reformation Day festival, starting with a 10 a.m. service in the city's two main churches, the Castle Church, where Luther nailed up the 95 Theses on October 31, 1517, and the St. Mary's Town Church, where Luther preached and was married. Confirmation candidates from around the world are invited to confirm their faith at moving services in these historical churches, known for the quality of their music and singing.

Afterwards, the cobblestone streets of the city come alive with a parade and street theater, with concerts and exhibitions in the ancient buildings.

If there is one day a year that is enjoyed by families right across LutherCountry, it has to be November 11th. This is Saint Martin's Day, when families in the federal state of Thuringia in Germany celebrate two "Martins": Saint Martin of Tours and Martin Luther.

Both played very important roles in the history of LutherCity Erfurt, with Saint Martin of Tours being the city's patron saint and Martin Luther having been baptized there. In commemoration, local citizens will therefore celebrate St. Martin's Day on November 10th with a big festival featuring old traditions, music and delicious pastries.
